Queste pagine sono dedicate all’opera degli italiani «bilingui» che offrono i propri servigi come traduttori dall’italiano all’inglese su Proz.com, una delle più grandi borse lavoro per traduttori on-line. Quelli che seguono sono solo alcuni esempi dei danni che può fare un traduttore non madrelingua, e vorrebbero anche servire da avviso ai potenziali clienti: attenzione, quando vi trovate di fronte persone che sono nate e cresciute in Italia, ma affermano di essere perfettamente in grado di tradurre verso l’inglese.
C’è il caso di una signora che si definisce non solo bilingue, ma «madrelingua inglese», e sostiene di lavorare come traduttrice dall’italiano all’inglese fin dal 1985. E in effetti l’elenco dei suoi lavori e clienti fa una certa impressione: finché non si leggono le sue traduzioni.
Oppure il caso del traduttore che si vanta di essersi diplomato «con lode» a un prestigioso corso per traduttori e interpreti con sede a Roma; ma il suo lavoro fornisce ogni prova necessaria che tradurre non è cosa che si possa, in effetti, imparare in una scuola.

Comment: Commento: Anche un alunno di seconda media (che studi inglese o italiano non importa) saprebbe distinguere tra un macchinario (machine) e una macchina (car), e tra la cucina intesa come ambiente (kitchen) e quella intesa come arte (cuisine o cooking). Questi non sono errori da madrelingua.

Per esempio, si può dire «ambientale» in italiano, ma ambiental in inglese non esiste; un agglomerate inglese è un «conglomerato» italiano, vale a dire una «roccia formata da detriti e abbondante cemento», e non è certo il tipo di cosa che uno vuole trovarsi davanti in vacanza; e ci sono almeno tre modi diversi per tradurre una «accurata» scelta di vini, ma nessuno di questi è accurate. Si notino anche i molti errori di ortografia. |

Commento: Siamo giusti, qui nemmeno l’originale italiano brilla per chiarezza. Ma per quanto paradossale sembri, tanto peggio è scritto un testo, tanto meglio bisogna saper maneggiare la lingua di arrivo per poterlo tradurre; per questo è essenziale che il traduttore sia di lingua madre inglese. In questo testo, iperoboli e «marketinghese» sono stati tradotti parola per parola, e il risultato è di fatto incomprensibile; si noti anche che il termine «reticolazione» è stato lasciato in italiano. Ma per i clienti italiani che non conoscono l’inglese giudicare la qualità di una traduzione può essere difficile, e cogliere errori come questi, impossibile. |

Ci sono gli italianismi come l’articolo davanti all’anno, o i plurali che dovrebbero diventare singolari ma non lo diventano; in compenso si mette la S del plurale inglese dopo le unità di misura espresse alla maniera italiana. Ma il problema alla base di questa traduzione è che non viene compresa alcuna sfumatura di significato: che diavolo sono, una «spaziosa forza lavoro» o un «istituto di verniciatura personale»? |

Ma ci sono anche errori ben più elementari: niente maiuscole negli aggettivi di nazionalità (diversamente che in italiano), confusione fra la preposizione to e l’avverbio too, incapacità di coniugare i verbi, o di distinguere tra singolari e plurali e tra articoli determinativi e indeterminativi. A ogni modo, la cosa più evidente qui è la totale mancanza di familiarità della traduttrice con la cultura di arrivo; in altre parole, non è madrelingua perché non sa come si chiamano certi oggetti in inglese. I segnaposto non sono «etichette per sedersi», un chandelier non è un candeliere ma un lampadario e dunque non lo si può mettere a tavola, possono esistere prescrizioni che riguardano l’abito, dress, e non il condimento, dressing … infine, chiunque possa sperperare danaro in orchidee sarà magari scialacquone ma certamente non «spendioso», parola che non esiste né in inglese né in italiano. |
